Downtown Jebel Ali is a modern and actively developing area in southwest Dubai, which is part of the larger Jebel Ali area created for expatriates in the 1970s. Downtown Jebel Ali emerged much later as part of a large-scale plan to develop the non-oil sector of the UAE's economy.
